Review: Consequences by Aleatha Romig

/*** Thanks to Aleatha and InkSlinger PR for the free copy  ***/

Oh my freaking God! This story was wrong in so so so so so so soooooo many levels I can't even start explaining.

There's no prince charming or happy ending. There's a lot of violence and lots and lots of control.

Maybe I have big issues or maybe I needed to read something different for once because I loved this book! Loved it so much I didn't care to finish reading it at 3am on a weekday with a meeting at the office at 8am.

The two words that come to my mind when I think about what I read are "dark" and "wrong".

This story blew my mind. I'm still in shock, trying to understand what I just read.
Aleatha is either a genius or a really sick person (I haven't decided on this one yet).

Anthony Rawlings is this forty-something billionaire, entrepreneur, successful guy that one day goes to a bar, flirts with the bartender and then abducts her thanks to some napkin they both signed that happens to be a contract between them. In a few words, he pays all her debts and she just has to be available for him whenever and for whatever he pleases.

This guy uses and abuses her. A lot. She's a captive now with no connection to the world. He controls what she does, feels, says and even wears. He has lots and lots of control issues. He shows her that every action has its consequences, some are good, some are real bad. He's a real bastard.

I have nothing more to do than stand up and give Aleatha a big applause for this book. It kept me up all night long, dying to know what was coming next (the suspense is sooo good). The twist and turns came so suddenly and out of the blue that I felt as lost as Claire. And the book is sooo long! It has a lot of pages (500+) which I've mentioned before it's something I adore!

I can't wait to read the rest of the books on this series.

P.D.: I think I need therapy after this one...

:: Review :: Dissipate by Kristin Mayer

/*** Thanks to Kristin Mayer and Inskslinger PR for the ARC  ***/

This book was a pleasant surprise for me because it involves something I had never read before.

The story starts with Sarah burying her mother and remembering the last moments with her. Basically, her last words were used to tell Sara that everything she knows is a lie. Even she is a lie...her name is not Sarah but Kenzie Brooks.

Sarah Kenzie and her mom lived at The Society, a cult/sect that lives deep in the woods, away from everything and everyone. They have a leader they call "the keeper" and they believe in "the light". The keeper keeps everyone in place in place, the place he wants, and has cut all contact with the doomed people (that means, the rest of the world).
The society lives under very strict rules and school stops at certain age but her mom continued homeschooling her under the radar.

Kenzie follows her mom's instructions and finds a letter she wrote where she tells Kenzie to run away, save herself, get into the world where she belongs.

Kenzie's 19 and she's alone in the world and has to decide if she wants to get away from the sect.
The development of this character was amazing. She might seem shy but every page she proves she's a strong girl. She's able to put away her fears, which are lots and big ones, and she does what she knows is right for her.
Everything her mom taught her makes sense as time pass.
Her journey of finding herself is what I loved the most about this book and I'm glad she crossed paths with Brooklyn and her brother, Aiden.

The suspense during all the book was awesome. I didn't want to put the book down.

Book Two in the Consolation Duet

I fell in love with Liam only to be left shattered into a million pieces. Again. The idea of being without him cripples me but the reality is, he’s gone.

He doesn’t understand and I can’t make him.

If only he’d see the conviction behind my words—then he’d still be here.

His voice is thick and husky as he refuses to break from my eyes. “Tell me you’re real.”
“I’m real.”
“Tell me you’re really here.”
“I’m here with you.” My hand rises, and I press my thumb to his lips. “I’m here for you. I’m here with only you. I need you so much.”
His eyes close as I rub my thumb, savoring the rough feel on my skin.
“Stay with me,” he pleads.
Liam’s hands rest on each side of my face as I drag him down further. “There’s nowhere else I want to be.” Our lips meet, and I lose myself.

:: Review :: Show me how by Anna Brooks

/* Thanks to Anna Brooks and Inkslinger PR for the ARC */

I loved this story from the very beginning. The friendship between Mary and Brandon was what got my heart.
And I loved that sweet moment when the name of the book makes full sense.

The story focus on the present but explains what happened 12 years ago, when Mary thought the only right thing to do was to run away. So she did.

After twelve years of hiding (her) and searching (him), life happens and this two cross paths again.

It a book full of emotions. Lots and lots of guilt but even more and more love.

I felt soooo bad for Brandon. The poor guy didn't have a chance to express his feelings before everything blew apart. I love his protectiveness, he's almost prince charming in this way because he feels the need to protect people and not in the get-in-the-room-lock-it-hide-the-key way. His career in law enforcement really makes sense.

Mary also had my heart in knots. The girl had a rough childhood, an absent
blood-family and a very present not-blood but loving family.
She has so much guilt in her that it's almost unbearable to read. Well,
not really, but I did felt really bad for her.

The way this book is written is also a nice thing. The story flows, the emotions
are easy to find between the lines and that's what makes it easy to feel what
the characters are feeling.

Show Me How Synopsis:

One choice can ruin everything…

When a stop at a shady motel puts Brandon Parker face to face with his best
friend, Mary, for the first time in over a decade, he almost didn’t believe it.

He’d never stopped searching for her, but even a career in law enforcement
couldn’t help him find a woman who wanted to stay invisible.

When Mary Benson ran away at eighteen, she did it with good reason. A man
was in the hospital because of her, and the people she loved were in danger.
She had to leave to keep them safe.

Mary's guilt was her consolation. She’d lived with her decisions and accepted
the hand dealt to her. But Brandon was about to shuffle the deck in a way she
never expected.

One thing was for sure, he thought she’d be happy to see him… and he’d never
been more wrong about anything in his life.

Anna has always had a passion for writing, and is thrilled to be able to bring
her stories to life.

Born in Wisconsin, she's lived in several Midwestern states. She enjoys
reading, writing and spending time outdoors with her husband and two boys.

Review : Reawakening (Regent Vampire Lords #3) by K.L. Kreig

/***   Thanks to the author for the ARC***/

This series gets better and better with each Lord! I loved Dev and thought the stakes were high and then Damian came and passed them by far and now Rom...I don't know anymore which one I love more.

Rom was this serious, mysterious, powerful vampire in the previous book I was so eager to read his story.

And I love the fact this book is huge (400+ pages) so there's a lot to read. I also love K.L. Kreig writing. She's an amazing storyteller. I can't believe she has a paying job during the day and also has time to write this amazing stories.

Sarah is one of the recovering saved women; she's intelligent and strong and adopted and a dreamwalker just like her sisters. She's the perfect match for Romaric, the vampire that's not just powerful but strong, dominant, commanding and *surprise* romantic.

Rom knows instantly that she's his Moira but can't believe his fate. He decides to visit his father, the same one he hasn't seen in centuries, and find if there's no mistake in having two Moiras. Although he knows better, he can't believe it so he basically puts him and Sarah in danger. Well, in more danger I have to say because Xavier is still on the loose.

Everyone has a past and Rom is no different. He has suffered a lot and his character is the result of that, is his way of protecting himself. He tells his story, his past, in his own time.

The chemestry between Rom and Sarah is amazing, almost palpable. The steamy sex and the dirty talking is to die for.
Sarah's banters with Rom are the cherry on top. That's the way to treat commanding vamps, girl!

I loved it.

Is there going to be a book about Geoffrey? and a book about Giselle? I really hope so. If I hat to choose just one I'd go with knowing more about Giselle. All that bitchiness has to have a reason.

Exclusive Excerpt
My head throbbed. The one thing I wanted, I couldn’t have—to crawl in bed with my mom while I asked her endless questions about what I should do. It was against the Keeper’s command to waste time thinking on anything that wasn’t productive. All thoughts were to be used for betterment of The Society. That was hard for me as I constantly desired to learn more.

I thought back on the last minutes with my mom.

Candles were lit on every surface, letting The Light know my mom neared the end. It was a haunting site. The Keeper’s raspy voice broke the silence. “Anita, your light has shown bright and will live on in Sarah. You will continue to burn bright in the light hereafter.”

My mom closed her eyes in acknowledgment. Speech had stopped hours ago as it exhausted her.

A week ago, she started not feeling well. We tried all of the herbal remedies, but she never got better. It was a mysterious disease that took one to two people every year from our group. The sickness started as an extreme headache and quickly turned to excessive vomiting.

Now, not seven days later, she lay in her bed dying and my world was falling apart.

The Keeper laid his hand on top of Mom’s and looked at me. His steel-colored beady eyes made me feel queasy. “Sarah, we shall give you a few minutes alone with your mom as time is coming. We shall all be downstairs.” A tear seeped from my mom’s eye. She appeared as scared as I felt. How was I going to survive here without her? As soon as we were left alone, I lunged toward my mom’s bed as I allowed the fear of the situation to take root in my mind.

“Mom, please don’t leave me. I can’t bear to think of a world that you’re not in. You’re my everything,” I sobbed.

My mom’s hand shook as it came to my face. Her fingernails had become dry, cracked and discolored. The herbalist said it was from lack of nutrition since my mom couldn’t keep anything down. I leaned into the touch before she had to drop her hand while I tried to memorize what it felt like to be near her—warm and loving.

She softly spoke, “Sarah, I should have told you sooner, but we haven’t been alone since I got sick. The truth is in an envelope in the bottom of the locked chest in the attic. The key is hidden underneath your nightstand. There’s not much time.”

I became desperate. “Mom, please don’t go.” A sob erupted. “Please. Please.”
Her eyes closed. “Shh…sweetheart. I thought I had more time to prepare. You’re not going to understand what I’m about to say, but it’s the truth. Your real name is Kenzie Brooks. If you want a choice and a say in your life, read the letter. Your inquisitive mind belongs in the world.”

My heart raced frantically. Kenzie Brooks. I’m Sarah. The world. Choice. Life. Those words were jumbled in my head as my mom’s breathing became more labored. My breathing increased while panic took over. “Mom, please. I don’t know what you’re saying. I don’t understand.”

We spoke in hushed whispers. “Kenzie, I love you. You are the light in my world. I’m so sorry for the choices I made, but know that I have loved you with my entire heart. Never doubt that.”

Mom stopped and took a few breaths. These were moments I was supposed to treasure, not be told secrets that would change my life more than it was. I wanted to argue with her, but she didn’t have much time. Her hand got colder. These were the last moments I would ever have with my mom. I wasn’t prepared to be left alone. I wasn’t strong enough to survive without her.

She continued, her voice growing weaker. “Regardless of what you think of my decision, know that I loved you. I tried to do what was best for you.”

Closing her eyes for a moment, they fluttered open as I spoke, “I love you, Mom. I will love you regardless of what the letter says. Know that. Always know that I’ll never stop loving you.”

“You’re so strong, my sweet Kenzie.” Mom’s eyes fully closed. A few more breaths followed, then she exhaled her last breath.

She was gone. Forever.

The room seemed dimmer without her in it. I crawled up in bed with Mom and sobbed as I held onto her. My body racked with uncontrolled sadness as I lost the only thing I cared about in this world.

She was gone. I was alone. Those two words echoed in my head—gone and alone.

Lead Me Not by A. Meredith Walters

In this dangerously sexy novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Find You in the Dark, a straight-laced college student meets a handsome but enigmatic stranger who lures her into an underground club scene, where she finds it difficult to resist temptation

Aubrey Duncan understands loss. She knows what rock bottom looks like, and she is determined to crawl back up to the top after the sudden death of her younger sister. She blames herself for her part in the tragedy, convinced that she could have done something, anything, to help her.

In her effort to gain redemption, Aubrey starts fresh at Longwood University and facilitates an addiction support group, hoping she can support someone else in the way she failed her sister. But what she doesn’t count on is an all-consuming fascination with group member Maxx Demelo, a gorgeous, blond, blue-eyed enigma who hides dark secrets behind a carefully constructed mask. He only reveals what he wants others to see. But Aubrey glimpses another Maxx hidden below the surface—a Maxx who is drowning in his own personal hell.

As Aubrey and Maxx develop an attraction too intense to ignore, he pulls her into the dark underbelly of the city club scene, where she is torn by her desire to save him and an inexplicable urge to join him in his downward spiral. Worst of all, she is beginning to love everything she should run away from—a man who threatens to ignite in her a fire that could burn her alive…

I stared harder at the picture, uncomfortable with the odd sense of familiarity I felt. Looking at the woman's graceful yet agonized form, I felt as though I should recognize her.

Bothered by my increasing disquiet, I stood up and walked closer. This was not your typical campus painting of daffodils and laughing students. I had seen this particular kind of art several times before. I leaned in to try to see the details in the poor lighting. And there it was- the tiny patterns on the woman's dress composed of dozens of Xs.

I didn't notice any numbers or words in this picture, though, so I didn't understand what its intent was. It was my understanding that X's paintings held the clues to the location of the club, Compulsion. But this picture seemed to have nothing to do with that.

This was a painting created for some other purpose.

"So what do you think?"

I looked over my shoulder to find Maxx standing behind me. I turned back to the picture, not bothering to answer him. The truth was, my outburst in the group had left me feeling raw and vulnerable, and seeing him so soon after making a gigantic ass of myself was embarrassing.

As he came up beside me, the sleeves of our jackets brushed against each other. Maxx inclined his head toward the painting and asked me again, "Well, what do you think of it?"

I shrugged, not really in the mood for small talk. My pounding head couldn't handle a go-around with the group Romeo. I started to walk away from him when he grabbed hold of my arm.

"Wait, Aubrey. Please." It was that word that did it. Please. It was uttered softly and sincerely. And it held me as fast and surely as if he had put his arms around me.

** Thanks to Lexi Blake and Inkslinger PR for the ARC **

To be honest, I'd never read Lexi Blake before this book. I applied to get the ARC when I saw this book was part of the 1001 dark nights series. That means that when I started reading it I had zero knowledge about the Masters and Mercenaries series...
Conclusion #1 after reading this book: I have to read this series ASAP.

Mitch is a very broken man that needs control, that's clear: his dad was nowhere to be seen while growing up, his mother was not mother at all and has 2 leeches as ex wives.
Laurel is Will sister which makes her the sister of Mitch's friend. She's this young lady, working as paralegal with Mitch, with a big heart and eyes set on Mitch. She likes him and everyone knows it, even him. She tries so hard to get his attention so hard that the line between crush and harass is really really thin. She even goes and start the training to be a sub at the club he assists, Sanctum. She's the kind of person that knows what she wants and tries her best of the best to get it and have her way.

He thinks he knows he's not good for her so he keeps his distance until the day something bad happens (can't say anything else without spoilers). So they find themselves trying something like a relationship; and this is what we have here in this book. He wanting something better for her and she wanting him.

I loved the book: the romance, the mystery, the suspense, the emotions (both good and bad) pouring from the characters. Lexi is a brilliant story teller. It's easy to get to the characters and understand why they act the way they do, it's also easy to feel what they feel at some point of the story.
The sex scenes? Absolutely amazingly written. There was no much room left for imagination in that area. Lexi did a great job describing this scenes.
Conclusion #2: Lexi is a brilliant story teller. I have to read more of her work!

On the other hand...I felt this is a pretty soft Dom for my taste. Maybe it's because I've reading lots of books about D/s relationships lately or I don't know why but I felt this Dom was not as dominant as he could be, having gone through what he's gone through in his life. It's not something bad, it's just that I feel some parts of him can be a little bit more, like the dominance in the bed. They guy is a perfect caretaker. And he's dominant and controlling; I don't know, I just need more (not sure more of what though).
Conclusion #3: I should read more vanilla stories so my hormones can come back to normal. I'll read this book again in a few months to see if I change my mind about this Dom opinion.

I really enjoyed this book. Today I came with beautiful big bags under my eyes because last night I stopped reading the second I hit the 100% on my kindle...and that was about 2am in the morning.

Go, read it.
